Flight Crew

Flight Crew

Is flight crew for you?

Do you love the excitement of watching hot air balloons inflate, lift off, and gracefully float wherever the wind takes them? Are you up for an adventure that includes carefully chasing balloons and helping them land safely? If so, joining a chase crew might be the perfect experience for you!

Come be part of three fun-filled, hard-working, and action-packed days at the Atlantic Balloon Fiesta. You’ll make unforgettable memories, build lasting friendships, and play a crucial role in making each flight a success.
Each balloon requires a dedicated ground crew of 2 to 6 people, and we couldn’t fly without you!

Important Reminder:

Pilots and crew members must always respect landowners’ property.

Before entering any field, you must stop and ask permission, get directions, and discuss the best way to safely approach the balloon.

What Does the Balloon Crew Do?

As a balloon crew member, you’re a key part of the team, helping the pilot prepare for launch, supporting the flight, and ensuring a smooth landing.

Pre-Flight Responsibilities:

• Unload equipment from the trailer
• Roll out the balloon envelope and position the basket
• Attach propane tanks and burner
• Hold the envelope open while it fills with cold air (via fan)
• Assist with hot air inflation by holding the skirt open
• Secure the top rope (crown line) to keep the balloon from rising too quickly
Once airborne, the crew follows the balloon by vehicle, maintaining contact with the pilot to assist with landing. It’s hard work—but incredibly rewarding. And sometimes, the pilot might just say, “Hop in!”

Teamwork is Everything

A successful flight isn’t luck—it’s a well-planned team effort. The pilot will brief the crew on the flight plan, and everyone will work together toward a safe and efficient launch, flight, and landing. Some pilots assign a Crew Chief (CC) to help coordinate tasks and keep communication flowing smoothly.

What Does the Chase Crew Do?

The chase crew is vital to a safe and successful landing. Their main job is to reach the projected landing area quickly and assist in:
• Deflating the balloon
• Packing the envelope, burners, and basket
• Loading all equipment back into the vehicle

All of this must be done following the manufacturer's guidelines to ensure the balloon is airworthy for its next flight.
